Ramadan is a holy month in the Islamic calendar. Muslims around the world conform to fasting from dawn until dusk staying away from all food, drink and inhalants such as cigarettes. Iftar (the breaking of fast) is served right after sunset, and all the rules applied during the day are temporality dissolved. We ask to please respect these forms by avoiding eating and drinking in public places. Doing so at touristic sites such as Petra or Jerash is not a problem. Only hotels and restaurants with tourist licenses will serve alcohol during Ramadan. Please note that tourist sites close earlier than usual during Ramadan to accommodate Iftar so an early start for touring is advisable.
